Her performances are intense and pulsing.  She has an innate ability for improvisation in the flamenco form that few can attest to.

"It is exciting to see an accomplished artist improvising.  Trying on the inspiration of the moment calls for more experience and in-depth knowledge..."  It is the daunting sense of uncertainty that "can seem both unnerving and raw, her emotional presence soon pulls you up straight."
Dance International

A choreographer of merit,  Carmen's work is innovative, provocative and powerful.  She conveys old traditions to the modern world articulating the primal essence of flamenco.

"Catapulting tyrannical tradition into the new millennium was her goal, and with a seven-piece band and her own wild abandon and fiery eyes, she achieved it, you bet.  Big-time."

Carmen Romero is the artistic director and principal dancer of the Compañía Carmen Romero, based in Toronto.  She is a towering force on the North American flamenco dance scene, who thrives in the emotional melting pot of this art form.

"She truly belongs to the history of flamenco in a way not easily achieved..."
  Dance International

Carmen teaches and directs at The School of Flamenco Dance Arts as well as international workshops, lectures and demonstrations.  She has also served as an adjudicator for the Canada Arts Council.  Carmen has received many awards, the latest being the Chalmers Award and the K.M. Hunter Emerging Artist Award given to artists who in the development stage of their careers have already made an impact on dance in Canada.

On June 23rd 2000, Carmen's trademark work Luna Llena qualified to compete in the IX Choreographic Exhibition of Spanish Dance and Flamenco in Madrid, Spain.  All other competitors were of Spain's best.  Placing seventh out of twenty two, and being the only North American to qualify, Carmen is truly recognized as an international flamenco dancer and choreographer.
