Flamenco Foundations is a class that teaches what I consider to be the rudimentary skills for building your dance and musical training in Flamenco. Whether you are in flamenco for recreation or profession the training should be the same.
The goal in the training is to be able to learn and explore all the movements of the upper body, hands, turns and traveling patterns as it relates to the dance. As well, understanding that a dancer is a musician in flamenco and learning how to do all aspects of the footwork in direct relationship to the rhythms and choreographies. Finally, it is essential to understand the context of flamenco in relation to the culture in and outside of Spain. Most importantly, flamenco dancers need to be independent. That means being able to dance on their own and collaborate with live musicians. I like to think of this as dance ecology. Understanding the structure of the song, dance and rhythms will empower your dance and you!
The classes are 1.5 hrs long as we need this time to work on the different aspects of your dance ecology. There are three levels.
Beginner/Level 1 is for people just starting out and or have some experience in flamenco dance and would like to revise fundamental technique.
Level 2 will look at strength and endurance training in the footwork and also develop the ideas of contractions and line development in the body that is so powerful in Flamenco. Also the sequencing of movement and footwork will become more intricate.
Level 3 is for people who have been dancing for a few years and are able to do contratiempo in footwork, Turns and more sophisticated traveling patterns. As well, a big focus is on speed and endurance in footwork and overall understanding of the song in relation to the dance and music. All levels use castanets as part of the training but not necessarily the choreographies.
Bulerias por Fiesta is a song and dance that is done at the end of a performance or at parties. It originated in the patios, kitchen and streets in southern Spain and is a song and dance that requires musicians, singers and dancers to understand the structure of the music and how dance is involved. The class is open to dancers from Foundations 1-3. Dancers will learn choreography if they need one yet also, dancers can bring in a choreography that they have and I will help learn how to communicate it. This class will also focus on the palmas/clapping which is incredibly important. You need to know how to accompany your fellow musician and dancer and how to work in a group.
Bata de Cola class will be an all levels class. The exercises at the beginning of class will have different levels of complexity done in the same musical time signature so that all dancers can be dancing at the same time. The focus in the fall term will be on technique and creating a short choreography.
I am thrilled to start the new term in a new place. See you all soon!
